An immensely enjoyable stay. We could not have asked for anything to improve the accommodation, the location or the ambience. Our hosts did everything to make our time as pleasurable as possible and we cannot speak highly enough of the experience.

Tips:

Be prepared for a little hill climbing but the galleries, scenery, pubs and restaurants make up for a little physical exertion.

Neil and Shiela are excellent hosts. Their breakfasts were all cooked to order, with a variety of cold dishes on offer. Rooms at West by Five were very attractive and spotless, with comfortable beds and pillows.A rather nice touch was a jar of fresh home baked cookies, each day. We enjoyed our stay immensely.

Tips:

Many restaurant choices in St Ives to suit all pockets. Good bus services connecting to all parts of Cornwall. Magnificent beaches, cliff walks, and an art lovers paradise.

9th October 2018:

Standard of facailities very good. Great view from our room and lots of nice touches like binoculars, good quality tea and coffee facilities in room and home baked biscuits. I would have liked to have eaten them all however St Ives is a non-stop culinary experience so I hope those not eaten found someone else willing to eat them! Breakfast excellent we tried as many things as we could. The compotes were terrific for example. Lots of useful tips from Neil and Sheila on arrival and super hospitality throughout!

Tips:

So many restaurants and cafes to try, that was not much opportunity to try the various pubs. It was good that the restaurants offered local beer by the bottle as well as wine. Walk to Zennor was great and the Tinners arms willingly organised a taxi. We would go for the Porthminster Kitchen at lunchtime as for the price of the meal the range of cooking techniques on show was great, but for fish cooked well, but slightly less refinement then the Mermaid was very good also. The Loft was also very good with pleasant/attentive staff. I personally preferred wandering round the free galleries leaving a donation to Tate St Ives which I unfortunately found to have closed rooms due to changes in exhibitions

Leach Pottery is worth a walk . If possible book restaurants, as they do get fully booked. Porthgwidden Beach Cafe is very good as is Seafood Cafe.

Jederzeit wieder. We had a lovely three days at West by Five. Neil and Sheila are wonderful hosts and make sure everyone is made to feel at home. The breakfasts are very good with a special choice each day, fresh croissants and lovely home made preserves. The rooms are very clean and well equipped with quality bedding, toiletries, choices of teas, fresh coffee, not to mention home made cookies! The location of the property is very close to the Tate Gallery and the centre of St Ives with all the restaurants close by.

Tips:

St Ives is a very popular and unique place and gets very busy, but it has a character of its own and just exploring the town and coastal walks can fill your time. The Tate is well worth a visit. The restaurants are good, but do need to be booked in advance. We reserved the Cellar Bistro which was very good.

Excellent, made our honeymoon perfect.... little details like local information, best places to eat, home made cookies every day and wine glasses put with the wine we had with us. Gave us a bottle of prosecco on arrival to celebrate and put the pillow cases which were sent as a wedding gift on our bed. The choice and quality of the breakfasts each morning couldn’t have been better anywhere. The room we had was spotless, comfortable and a beautiful view. Sheila and Neil genuinely nice people.

Tips:

Relax as there is enough to see and do in St Ives without getting in your car at all. There are excellent walks and a good local bus service if wanting to see other towns/villages. Make the most of the sunsets on Porthmeor beach.

West by Five is a stunning Guest House in an equally stunning location. We stayed 22nd and 23rd May and were extended a warm and friendly welcome by the patrons Sheila and Neil. Room 2 offers a fabulous sea view, combining a seating area which overlooks the bay. Furnishing is modern and fresh and everything is immaculately clean. The location was perfect for us with The Tate Gallery, Barbara Hepworth museum and gardens, excellent restaurants and Town all within a 5 minute or so walk. Breakfasts were delicious, freshly cooked to order and provided an opportunity to engage in “around the table” conversation with other guests. Time for sightseeing was limited and Neil’s local knowledge helped us to focus on points of interest to us which were within a reasonable distance. We couldn’t fault this Guest House, highly recommend it and would definitely stay again if in the area.

Neil and Sheila were terrific hosts. Lots of local information shared. Breakfast was a real treat with homemade granola and a variety of freshly prepared stewed fruits, yogurts and cereals each morning before a choice of cooked local produce. The accommodation 5 star. Room 1 at the top of the stairs provided a panoramic sea view from its bay window. Lovely touches provided by the hosts including a welcoming cup of tea and biscuits on arrival plus homemade biscuits provided in our room to have with tea and coffee.

Tips:

Lots to see and do in St Ives such as visiting the St Ives Tate gallery. Loads of local galleries also worth a visit. Terrific coastal walks if you feel energetic or you can just be lazy and relax at one of the many cafes in town. Many great restaurants available. Try Porthminster Kitchen which we were very impressed with. Great quality of food and an extensive wine list.

This is the best of the best in bed and breakfast accommodations and hospitality. Sheila and Neal provide lovely accommodations, gourmet breakfasts, cookies as a daily treat and all their personal tips on the areas tourist offerings. They even offered us their warm blankets for our evening at the Minack Theatre.

Tips:

Check out what’s on at the Minack theatre. The walk back from a train ride to Saltings is great. We did the guided town walk which was led by an enthusiastic woman who provided some of the background of St.Ives and a few curiosities.

Just the perfect B&B, with marvellous hosts and excellent location close to the town centre and beaches. We would definitely stay at West by Five again.

Tips:

West by Five is very close to the Tate. Porthmeor Beach Cafe is excellent and very close by - booking is strongly advised, which is the case for most restaurants in St Ives.

Neil and Sheila were the prefect hosts. Warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. They took us into their B&B with open arms, fed us very well, and helped out whenever they could, without being an imposition. We could not have hoped for a better place to stay at St Ives.

Tips:

Mainly, do/eat where Neil recommends. The Black Rock and Harbour Fish and Chips were excellent, and Alba was a good upscale choice. Lunch/cream teas at the Searoom was excellent. The Barbara Hepworth museum and Leach Pottery are definitely worth visiting, as I'm sure the Tate would be (though it was closed). Rambling on the southwest path, particularly toward Zennor, was a great trek. St Ives is a place not to miss.

West by Five is close to Porthmeor Beach, and about a 15 minute walk from the main bus station and train station.

Tips:

The food at Porthmeor cafe is fabulous. If you are not driving, there are bus and train options to go to nearby towns and villages. Depending on where and when during the year you are travelling, public transport options can be hourly or less frequent.

From booking to leaving the service from Neil and Sheila was first class. Lifts to the car park and help with booking restaurants were the little extras which made us feel very welcome. Neil and Sheila are wonderful hosts. We enjoyed meeting other guests and chatting over breakfast around the large dining table. There were good choices at breakfast and everything was cooked and presented beautifully. Our room and ensuite were very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed Sheila's home made biscuits, different everyday. The location was great for us with lovely views of Porthmeor beach. Being so high over the bay means a steep uphill walk back from St Ives centre which might be difficult for some but definitely worth the effort.

Tips:

Can't recommend West by Five Highly enough. Wanted to add plus's to the 5. From the first contact Neil & Sheila were attentive, caring and informative to ensure that my stay was as pleasant as possible. The premises were immaculate - very well kept and attractive. My Room was elegant and comfortable. I felt very at home here. The breakfast choices were excellent, perfectly cooked and presented. Every day fresh homemade biscuits were put in the room...high standard toiletries in the bathroom ..a lift to and from the car park - these touches just lifted it beyond the standard Guest house experience. You will not be disappointed to stay there. Congratulations to Neil & Sheila for running such a warm and professional establishment.I enjoyed my stay and will definitely stay with you again when down in St Ives again. (Missing my biscuits so baked some cornish ginger today - they were tasty but no where near as tasty as yours!)Thank you.

Tips:

Neil & Sheila's suggestions are the way to go. However, I did particularly like eating at thePorthmeor beach Café - excellent Red Thai curry, chocolate salted caramel dessert and a bramble & basil cocktail whilst looking out across the bay on my second evening. I could have eaten there every night as there were so many good choices (Tapas)- definitely go but maybe book ahead.

Clean is important to me and rooms are spotless to the point that it's hard to believe anyone has been in the room before you. All dealings from our first booking have been professional and conscientious. Our only regret is in not being able to stay longer. We hope to return one day.

Tips:

Porthminster Kitchen and Beach cafe were excellent. Harbour Spa and Terrace tea rooms great. We had a good lunch at Pedn Olva Hotel. All these places had great views, food and service. So clean and inviting with lovely personal touches, such as Neal's Yard toiletries. Fantastic view over Porthmeor beach...the quality of light will amaze you! Our bed was incredibly comfortable. Excellent breakfast with plenty of choice - again care taken to make this as personal as possible. We stayed two nights but did not want to leave! Neil being a soulmate northerner made my weekend! What fantastic hosts! Genuine thanks again for an unforgettable weekend. We will be back. Very very highly recommended. Would give 6 stars if I could.

Recommend The Porthmeor Cafe, Cellar Bistro, Cornish Deli, porthkidney beach (lovely and quiet)

Neal(Neil??) & Sheila, you are the best!! Just wish I had felt better, otherwise the stay, breakfasts, instructions on the town, etc., were great. And we really enjoyed what little we saw of Penzance....The Benbon(?) pub was unbelievable, had lunch there, got up at 5:30 next day, Heathrow, Atlanta, then the long drive home. Feeling better. Thanks for everything. Cheers and hope we come back some day. Robbie

A very special place to stay. Breakfast was delicious every day, the beds comfy and everything we needed was supplied. We stayed in Room 2 which has amazing views over Porhmear Beach. It is a short walk to everywhere in St Ives so a very convenient location. Was a treat to park the car when we arrived and forget about it for a couple of days.

Tips:

The cafes on the beaches...Porthmeor, ,Porthgwidden and Porhminster are all worth a visit for lunch or dinner. Make sure you pre book for window tables overlooking the beaches.

Many thanks to Neil and Sheila for making us feel extremely welcome in their superb home. We have regularly stayed in 4* and 5* hotel accommodation but our 3 days at West by Five exceeded many of those other places. The home, room and views were all exceptional and the breakfast was a highlight of each day, closely followed by the home-baked biscuits each day!

Tips:

A great location for visiting St Ives and for enjoying some coastal walking. For a challenge, try the 4-hour walk along to Zennor - some climbing required, but the views are stunning. For an easier and very picturesque 2.5-hour walk, take the path to Lelant, then take the train back into St Ives for a "Moomaid" ice cream in the harbour.

Tips:

Just walk aling the coast and through all the little quirky streets in the town - St. Ives is so beautiful. Lots of nice shops & restaurants too. Important information for tourists: you'll have to go out for dinner early. Some restaurants close already at 8 or 9 the latest.

Neil and Shelia are very welcoming hosts, and definitely made it feel like a home from home. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay at West by Five. The location couldn't have been better, fantastic views. Room was extremely clean and tidy, and refreshed each day, including change of tea/coffee/home made cookies. Breakfast was perfect, ample choices including help yourself home made muesli and cereals, freshly baked croissants, varied cooked choices available including vegetarian and a daily special. We did not use the lounge area, however if desired there are DVDs and books for to guide you during your stay and for general interest.

Tips:

Restaurant recommendations were spot on, I think you'd be hard to find a restaurant that isn't to ones taste in St. Ives. West by Five is an excellent guest house, there's a friendly atmosphere and I would say it's one of the best guest houses I've stayed in. It's very professionally run and the attention to detail is impressive. Most guest houses cut corners on things like the tea and coffee and soap, shampoo etc. but at West by Five these items were very high quality. It's location is superb and on the whole I had a very enjoyable stay.

Tips:

Be prepared for the short but steep hills in St. Ives! You can see seals at the end of the pier near sunset when the fishing boats come in. I would recommend visiting the Barbara Hepworth museum which has a wonderful garden full of her sculptures. There are too many good eating places to mention. Tips:

My favourite restaurants are The Seafood Cafe, Porthminster Beach Cafe and the Black Rock. I tend to book these places 3 weeks before because they can get very busy. There is a brilliant walk from St Ives to Lelant on the coastal path that I would highly recommend. Just before getting on the train from Lelant saltings there is a lovely restaurant called Scarlets. Go there and share a platter it's amazing! You need to spend a day on the Harbour beach. Hire deckchairs and sit and the top. There is a seagull with a tag that has W186 on it. You will get hours of entertainment watching him!

Everything was wonderful and we would definitely choose to stay with you again if we returned to St Ives. We especially appreciated the pick up from the station not realising how steep a climb it would be! We have just a couple of suggestions of how it could be even more perfect (from our perspective). Breakfast was fantastic but we would have liked the option of having baked beans. Daves' favourite! The home made cookies were delicious and we would have liked more filtered water to make another cup of tea to wash them down with. I know we probably could have just asked but didn't like to be a bother.

Tips:

Our favourite meal was at the Harbour and we had a lovely strawberry cream tea at Madeleines. Our top tip is to get the train to Lelant village and then walk back along Porthkidney sands to Carbis Bay on a completely deserted beach.

We received a really lovely welcome from Neil, then had to dash off for a rather difficult day at a family funeral. We came back exhausted, late in the evening and were greeted by a beautiful room with a view we looked forward to seeing in daylight and a wonderfully comfy bed with perfect linen. Everything was spotlessly clean, and every detail had been carefully considered. Excellent shower, gorgeous Neal's Yard products, fluffy towels, etc. Breakfast was a triumph, the best we've had anywhere. Neil and Sheila are superb hosts and we can't wait to go back when we have more time to simply enjoy the please of staying here.

Tips:

West by Five is perfectly situated overlooking the sea with a short walk down the the pretty harbour town with great galleries and lovely shops. There are plenty of very good restaurants - we've always liked Cafe Pasta, the food is great, service is excellent and the position on the harbour front is delightful. If you stay at West by Five, wear comfortable shoes - it's a very very steep walk down to the harbour on cobbles and uneven steps, which is lovely, but you'll feel a little unsteady (I was in completely the wrong footwear and had to cling onto the all the railings, walls, window ledges, husband, etc!!)

As someone who spends much time in St Ives, this wonderful b and b was a great find. It is in a splendid location set above Portmeor Beach - for me the best town beach in the country. It's key asset is the contrasts within such a small town from the great surf beach of Portmeor to the more sheltered Portminster where the seas are Caribbean like when the sun shines. Great restaurants - the uber chic three beach cafes are a particular must.Tate St Ives - closed for a major extension until 2018 - is a well worth a visit. Above all St Ives is a town in which to amble, relax and soak up its totally unique atmosphere.

Lovely bedroom with fabulous view, nice toiletries and comfy bed. The owners are very friendly and helpful with a warm welcome when you arrive. Really nice breakfast choices too. Parking nearby costs £7.00 for 24 hours and you do need to be fit to walk up and down from the harbour area to this B&B.

Tips:

We recommend The Cellar Bistro at 29 Fore Street for a lovely dinner that is good value.

Very warm and welcoming hosts. Room was very clean, bright and airy. Sadly weather was damp so could not take advantage of the balcony, maybe next time. Loved the St Kitts Herbery toiletries. Breakfast was very good with plenty of choice for all tastes. 9.15 cut off for breakfast at the weekend seemed somewhat early and rigid for those of us who start each weekday with the larks. Had a great stay.

Tips:

Tinman Arms Lelant excellent menu and great atmosphere. Lovely to sit outside on a warm evening. Gurnards Head. Great food and wine list with very pleasant staff. Cafe at Lizard Point has a good choice on their menu. Padstow - great cafes bars and shops. Porthleven - fish and chips were great. All dependant on having access to a car.

Thank you to Neil and Sheila for a wonderful stay at West by Five. A perfect location with fantastic sea view and in walking distance from the beaches and town. We stayed in the top room with a glorious sea view. They were perfect hosts, really made us feel at home, with great recommendations for walks and places to eat and visit. Freshly baked delicious cookies every day. And the breakfasts were out of this world. We cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Tips:

Pottering around St Ives is a joy, the coastal path is lovely in all weathers, Porthgwidden Beach Cafe is superb! Minack Theatre is well worth the drive, esp on a sunny day. Visit Lands End for 2 minutes just to say you have been there, then leave... it is tacky and awful and this kind of development at such an important landmark should never have been allowed.

We loved staying at West By Five so much last year that we came back for another wonderfully welcoming & relaxing break this week. Neil & Sheila have made us feel as welcome as family or old friends. They are generous hosts in their truly peaceful and beautiful, clean home. The views from the rooms are stunning... overlooking the sea and cliffs (very close to the Tate museum). Breakfasts are generous and great quality, really setting you up well for the day. They seem to have found the best beds in the world! We are definitely going to return again soon.

Tips:

Neil gave us plenty of great tips of where to eat and visit in the local area.... every one was a winner! We have enjoyed delicious meals and lovely walks on both stays in St Ives thanks to their guidance.

I was a lone traveller not knowing my way around St Ives but Neil and Sheila who run West by Five couldn't have been more helpful in providing me with a map and pin pointing local places of interest which I said I was interested in. Although the Bed and Breakfast is up a steep hill it is only a short walk down to Porthmeor beach and the rest of St Ives.

Tips:

If you say what you are interested in finding, Neil and Sheila will do their best to indicate the best places you should go. The fish and chips from the Harbour Fish and Chips (by the lifeboat station) are very good. I was happy to be tripping over the art studios and galleries as I walked around - there are so many. It was wonderful.

Hi We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with you. Superb location and a really warm welcome from you both. You have a beautiful home and it felt like we were guests in your home rather than guests in a B & B. If I were to be really picky (sorry!), I do think that for the £150 per night price, you could give more tea and milk in the room, there was only enough for 2 cups. And just one other thing, the shower was really powerful, but the cubicle was challenging in size for me and Jim could only stand and have a sloosh down. We would definitely come back but perhaps in a room with a bigger shower (if there is one?) I'm only giving this feedback based on your top end price. The breakfast was great and the plums were to die for!! All in all a fabulous stay, thank you.

Neil and Sheila epitomise the essence of a great B&B. They have seen to the smallest details with great care and thought. The house is very welcoming, the shower is superb, the bed comfortable, the breakfast the best I've had in a B&B, and they make an effort to ensure that every aspect of your stay in St Ives is the best it can be.

Tips:

The Porthmeor cafe is a must. Neil's recommendations were all great. Stroll into all the galleries and studios as they are evidence of a thriving art scene. Go to Seal Island. The boat ride along the coast is spectacular.

Very friendly and made our stay very enjoyable. Our room was clean, comfortable, it had everything we needed and it also had an amazing view. The little touches such as the homemade biscuits left in your room make all the difference, everything was lovely.

Tips:

There are so many beautiful walks and a maze of side streets and cobbled alleys it's just worth trying to get lost to see it all. We ate at 'Blas' for a great burger which I'd recommend. We also stopped for a cream tea at 'olives cafe' it had lovely fresh homemade food and a great location to watch the world go by.

Niel and Sheila at West By Five offer what could be the best B&B in the UK! St Ives being an beautiful location, they lovingly offer an unfaltering 5 star B&B with a personal touch on everything from the homely welcome, immaculate spacious rooms with sea views or a private balcony with quality furniture, linen and en suite, breakfasts to be excited about and an intricate knowledge of the whole area to feast your exploratory urges. Freshly baked cookies in the room and the perfect choice of toiletries add to list if details that set West By Five out from just another 'very nice B&B'. Being excited to write this review confirms this was undoubtedly the best stay we could have wished for on a rather special weekend for us! Our thanks and appreciation for your effortless hospitality and a guarantee to returning soon.

Tips:

Whatever Niel says about the area whether it be a guide to food and drink, coastal walks or attractions, is unbiased and well worth following. We highly recommend the following: the Porthmoer offers a great beach atmosphere and sunset views, the Porthminster serves a very tasty menu with excellent service and Black Rock restaurant gives a more intimate feel with excellent food. The walk from St Ives to Lelant is simply stunning and gets surprisingly peaceful or a trip to the amazing Minack Theatre, Porthcurno, is a place to be wowed by. By foot, car, train, boat or open top bus, there is so much to see that a week would never be enough.

Sheila and Neil are great hosts - very congenial and knowledgeable about the area. The view of the beach from the 2 front bedrooms is "to die for" (considering that the view is over the town cemetery.) The bedding is comfortable. Breakfasts are wonderful. The dining/common area is comfortable and beautifully decorated. We loved the decorating theme throughout. Minor critical comment: the shower enclosure is a bit tight for older and/or fat American tourists (we're spoiled).

Tips:

We loved St. Ives! Our hosts' recommendations for restaurants were spot-on. We highly recommend St. Andrews Street Bistro, Ocean Grill, and the Tea Rooms. If you're driving to St. Ives, you won't need a car in town. Parking anywhere in town is a rare commodity. Fortunately there is a public long-term car park just a few steps from West by Five. Try to get the RingGo mobile app to pay for parking in the town's car parks. Pack good walking shoes and casual clothes, you won't need anything dressy. Basically everything is downhill from Wx5, so it will be a good work-out walking back at the end of your day in town.
